Of Course It Is

Oh, listening to a particularly smashing show on “This Is the Modern World” today.  Trouble’s a badass, man.  I deeply respect that woman.  Refined curator of the most important mental space in my life.  Luxuriant, grounded, earnest, lite.  Dig ya’.

My dad and I had a plan.  A call at 10:00AM was going to book end early our weekly walk.  He was curt when I talked to him last night.  No.  He did not want to go out earlier than usual.  No. It wasn’t a good idea to meet up in Rosendale at the place I’d found on a Wallkill Trail trail map because it wasn’t located there, it was in Phoenicia an hour’s drive away. And what’s more going to Rosendale would never work as we’d spend forty five of our one hundred and twenty minutes driving two and from and we opted to do meet up here and perhaps just walk the rail trail behind the house.

We’d also discussed cutting up wood with the chain saw.  It needed work when last we’d tried, and he got the spark plugs changed and dropped it back off here.  “It’s the most dangerous tool you’ll ever use,” he’s said gravely, on more than one occasion.  One thinks of all the many times one has mishandled a shovel or a rake or a mower but this would be rather different.  We found a hand saw, although one is missing and walked down to the back part of the yard with the orange chainsaw.  It wouldn’t start.  He couldn’t start it.  I pulled it pretty, damn hard, three or four dozen times, and I arrogantly submit this this was not a matter of brute force.  Something else was up.  We went for a walk instead.

Stomach’s grumbling.  Of course, it is.  Ain’t nothing been down in there since Tuesday dinner.  There’s certain tight focus that comes on the day you know you’re going to break a multi-day fast.  You can’t help but be happy, knowing that in fifteen minutes or so, the refrigerator is yours to raid.  It was sunny and hopeful all day and now a thick, complete cover of clouds has settled over New Paltz.  Time to order some pizza.
